My home country of Ireland is often referred to as the Emerald Isle due to its lush green rolling hills, verdant landscapes, forests and hidden valleys. For Irish people, the colour green is a source of immense pride and patriotism and has a huge historical significance, connecting its people and the country in a profound way. Green is a colour that has long been a symbol of Irelands beauty and prosperity. Associated with Ireland since the mid-17th century, it is now a symbol of Irish heritage and pride. It is also a symbol of Irish unity, peace and hope for the future. The colour green is prominent in the Irish flag and in the national symbol, the shamrock. The shamrock is said to have been used by Saint Patrick to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity to the Irish people.
Many of Irelands customs and traditions evolve around the colour green. St. Patrick’s Day. famously a traditional Irish holiday, is an annual feast day that celebrates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It falls on March 17th, which is said to be the day of his death in the 5th century. The day is celebrated with parades, feasts and the wearing of green, and is a national holiday in Ireland.
In many cultures around the world, green is associated with nature, fertility, renewal and growth. In Eastern cultures, green often symbolises health, new beginnings, and harmony. In Islamic countries, green is often seen as the colour of paradise and is associated with religious figures. In the West, green is associated with money, wealth, luck and prosperity. But it can also symbolise money, ambition and envy.
But what does it mean to be green and Irish. Being green Irish means having a strong connection to Irish culture and heritage. This includes celebrating Irish holidays, participating in Irish sports and activities and having pride in Irish traditions and folklore. It also means having a strong sense of environmental responsibility, being conscious of the impact of our actions on the environment. People and Irish people wear green to express their connection with nature and show support for environmental causes. Modern day green is associated with words like; environmentally friendly, renewable, energy efficient, sustainable, natural, eco-friendly, biodegradable, and recyclable.
In technology, green often symbolises environmental sustainability or energy efficiency. In science, green is associated with the fields of ecology, botany and biochemistry. In psychology, green is often seen as a calming and peaceful colour. In physiology, green is sometimes associated with the heart and its ability to give life and healing powers. So how can we all help to sustain the green in our lives and homes. How can you and I make a change , even small, that will make a difference.

The key thing nowadays is to also put our green “fashion thinking head” on and buy well. Buy less, but buy well. One of the other ways in which I made a change in a fashion sense, was to incorporate natural fabrics such as silk in my wardrobe. Considering my fashion purchases. Buy fewer better quality pieces that will stay in my wardrobe forever. Instead of buying fast fashion items that will go out of style quickly, I look for pieces of clothing and accessories that will last for years. I now invest in timeless, classic pieces. A silk scarf definitely hits these boxes and is also made of a natural fibre so is not harmful to the environment as it is will naturally biodegrade. A silk scarf is versatile and multi-functional. It can be styled and worn in multiple ways. The larger the better as you can double your large scarf as a sarong or shawl wrap. Remember you'll always find a great silk scarf in amongst the rails and a silk scarf is always an exciting thrift purchase.
So lets all think and wear green this Saint Patricks festival time. Let us all be mindful about what it means to wear green in both a festive sense but also for the planet and the people and world around us. Wear green and be proud of our country, our heritage. Be proud to wear green because it symbolises, the natural beauty of our planet, the life it sustains, and the hope and optimism that comes with the idea of sustainability and environmental conservation.
